Toothbrush Rag Rug Workshop

Overview

2026 Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops – Rediscovering the Past Through Craft.

Toothbrush Rag Rug Workshop

Step back in time and explore the traditional craft of rag rug making, a practical skill once used to transform old textiles into useful household items.

In this hands-on heritage workshop, you’ll learn the classic Toothbrush Rag Rug method, creating a durable and beautiful rug entirely from recycled fabric strips. Using a custom-made wooden shuttle, you’ll follow the same time-honoured techniques that once turned everyday scraps into functional works of art.

Morning 9.30am – 11.30am / Afternoon 12.30pm – 2.30pm

As part of AdventureFest 2026, Redlands Coast Museum invites you to embark on The Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops: a hands-on journey through heritage skills, artistry, and self-discovery. Vintage trades meet modern creativity in a series of immersive workshops that celebrate craftsmanship as a living link between past and present

Step back in time and discover the traditional craft of rag rug making, a practical skill once widely used during times of hardship to repurpose old textiles into useful household items.

In this hands-on heritage workshop, participants will learn the classic Toothbrush Rag Rug method—creating a beautiful and durable rug made entirely from recycled fabric strips. Traditionally, an old toothbrush was shaped into a tool for weaving the rug, and in this workshop, you’ll use a custom-made wooden shuttle to follow the same time-honoured technique.

You will create a medium size rag rug suitable for washing in a home washing machine, perfect for everyday use or as a handmade gift.

What you will learn

  • How to join fabric strips to create a strong, usable filament
  • How to use the wooden shuttle effectively
  • How to maintain tension and shape while working

What to bring

  • 2 single bed sheets (preferably one plain and one patterned, or two contrasting colours)
Tip: Op shops are a great place to find well-worn sheets that are softer and easier to work with.
