Spoon Carving Workshop

Step back into a slower time and experience the traditional craft of wood carving in this relaxing, beginner-friendly workshop. Using time-honoured techniques and hand tools, participants will shape a wooden spoon from a pre-cut timber blank while learning carving fundamentals, wood grain direction and safe tool handling. A mindful and rewarding introduction to a timeless skill passed down through generations.

As part of AdventureFest 2026, Redlands Coast Museum invites you to embark on The Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops: a hands-on journey through heritage skills, artistry, and self-discovery. Vintage trades meet modern creativity in a series of immersive workshops that celebrate craftsmanship as a living link between past and present.

Step back into a slower time and experience the traditional craft of wood carving in this relaxing, beginner-friendly spoon carving workshop.

Using time-honoured techniques and hand tools, participants will shape a wooden spoon from a pre-cut timber blank while learning the fundamentals of carving, wood grain direction and safe tool handling. This workshop offers a hands-on introduction to a skill that has been passed down for generations—practical, mindful and deeply satisfying.

Hosted by Catie & Steve, you’ll be guided step-by-step through the carving process in a supportive and enjoyable environment. By the end of the session, you will leave with your own handmade spoon, ready to finish, use at home, or gift to someone special.

A variety of spoon blanks and timber types will be available to choose from (depending on availability).

 

What’s included

  • Use of all carving tools during the workshop (slöyd knife, hook knife and gouge)
  • Choice of a pre-cut spoon blank (timbers and shapes vary)
  • Step-by-step instruction in traditional carving methods
  • Learn wood grain direction, tool safety and carving techniques
  • Take home your completed spoon ready to finish
  • Morning Tea – Devonshire tea, scone with jam & cream + tea or coffee

Hand tools are not included in the ticket price, however tools will be available to purchase on the day.

All our Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops have a limited number of participants to ensure you receive all the assistance and direction you require.
