Creative Leather Tooling – Open Workshop

This hands-on workshop introduces the foundational techniques of decorative leather tooling. Create your own Glasses Case, Purse or choose leather valet tray and key ring while learning how to use stamping tools to produce both simple and intricate patterns with confidence. Perfect for beginners and anyone wanting to explore a timeless craft.

Redlands Coast Museum invites you to embark on The Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops: a hands-on journey through heritage skills, artistry, and self-discovery. Vintage trades meet modern creativity in a series of immersive workshops that celebrate craftsmanship as a living link between past and present.

Step back in time and try your hand at a craft once used to create beautifully detailed leather goods.

This hands‑on workshop introduces participants to the foundational techniques of decorative leather tooling. Attendees will create a choice of glasses case, purse or valet tray and key ring while learning how to apply stamping tools to produce both simple and intricate designs with confidence.

 

Workshop Content

·         Introduction to creative tooling on natural vegetable-tanned leather

·         Correct use and positioning of stamping tools

·         Techniques for creating clean designs within borders

·         Exploring how one tool can create multiple pattern effects

·         Completing a leather valet tray and key ring using learned techniques

 

Outcome
Participants will leave with two finished leather pieces and a strong foundation in tooling skills, ready to apply to future projects such as book covers, wallets, belts, bags, clutches, and key tags.

This workshop is beginner-friendly and perfect for anyone interested in learning a timeless skill and creating a beautiful, practical item to take home.

About the Facilitator – Cherryl McIntyre

Cherryl is a Brisbane-based leather artist with over 40 years’ experience, blending traditional techniques with innovative designs. She has taught leathercraft to students of all ages and abilities, both locally and internationally, and runs her own label, Exquisite Leather.

Cherryl is a founding member of the Leathercrafters Association of Qld and has coordinated the International Leather Conferences “Dimensions in Leather.” In 2008, she became the first non-American to receive the prestigious Al Stohlman Award for her exceptional skill and dedication to the craft.

Her workshops cover pattern making, cutting, colouring, and creating personal designs, welcoming everyone from beginners to advanced students.
