Step back in time and discover the traditional art of pyrography as you create your own custom wide-brim faux suede hat in this hands-on heritage workshop. Learn how this historic technique—used for centuries to decorate natural materials—has evolved into a modern form of wearable art. Guided step-by-step, you’ll hand-burn your own unique design into the brim of your hat to take home.

As part of AdventureFest 2026, Redlands Coast Museum invites you to embark on The Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops: a hands-on journey through heritage skills, artistry, and self-discovery. Vintage trades meet modern creativity in a series of immersive workshops that celebrate craftsmanship as a living link between past and present.

 

Step back in time and discover the traditional art of pyrography as you create your own custom design into a premium faux suede brim hat.in this hands-on heritage workshop.

 

Pyrography—also known as woodburning—has long been used to decorate natural materials with intricate patterns and personal markings. In this workshop, participants will learn how this historic craft has evolved into a modern form of wearable art, as you hand-burn your own design into a faux suede hat.

 

Facilitated by Sharon from Burnt Brims, Custom Hats, one of Australia’s pioneering hat-burning artists, this workshop is suitable for beginners and experienced creatives alike. You’ll be guided through the techniques of controlled line work, shading and texture to create a unique hat that reflects your personal style.

What’s included

  • Choice of premium wide-brim faux suede hat  (styles may vary)
  • Use of professional pyrography tools and shading equipment
  • Step-by-step instruction and design guidance from Sharon
  • Stencils provided, with the option to create your own design
  • Safety briefing and ongoing support throughout the session
  • Decorative embellishments including ribbons, feathers, charms and more
  • Take home your finished custom hat to wear with pride

What to wear
Comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes, optional to bring your own apron.

All our Heritage Artisan Faire Workshops have a limited number of participants to ensure you receive all the assistance and direction you require.
